The Theos Variant approach their album Tales from Ataraxia with a clear artistic intention: to explore the experiences that shape people while searching for peace in a world that rarely stands still. The Columbus, Ohio-based melodic rock duo, comprising vocalist Dan Lentz and guitarist and producer Geoff Haught, brings together soaring vocals, cinematic guitars, atmospheric textures, and modern rock songwriting across an 11-track release.
Arriving through Rock Sun Records and Virgin Music Group, Tales from Ataraxia reflects a band willing to reconsider its decisions in pursuit of a stronger artistic result. The album’s title points toward ataraxia, a state of inner calm that can feel difficult to maintain amid emotional conflict, uncertainty, and everyday pressures. Instead of forcing every song into one continuous narrative, The Theos Variant allows individual experiences and perspectives to shape the record.
That distinction gives the album room to explore contrasting emotional territory. Its broader atmosphere connects the material, but each track retains its own identity and story. This approach leaves space for listeners to interpret the music through their own experiences, whether they are navigating personal struggles, seeking clarity, or trying to find moments of stillness amid disruption.
The album’s development also demonstrates the duo’s commitment to their creative standards. After evaluating the original mixes, the band decided they lacked the consistency required to present the collection as intended. Rather than prioritize a release deadline, they enlisted Benedikt Hain of Outback Recordings to handle mixing and mastering, with Thomas Krottenthaler providing additional engineering and mix assistance. The decision reflects an understanding that an album must work as a complete listening experience, not simply as separate finished songs.
The release was preceded by Before the Nether, a four-track EP featuring “Starfall,” “Beacons,” “Mechanical Organism,” and “Into Ours.” Updated mixes of “Starfall” and “Into Ours” also reflect the additional attention given to the album’s final presentation.
Recognized as the Orpheus Global Independent Music Awards’ 2025 Band of the Year, The Theos Variant continues developing their place within melodic rock through a balance of intensity, atmosphere, and reflection. On "Tales from Ataraxia", the duo invites listeners to consider peace not as an effortless destination, but as something pursued through changing circumstances. The album’s lasting appeal lies in that tension: the desire for inner awareness alongside the realities that continually test it.
