Kinsley Conjures Time and Mystery with Hauntingly Beautiful EP GHOSTS

North Carolina-based Kinsley conjures a bewitching mix of folk and atmospheric rock textures in GHOSTS, a new EP made up of three songs. Adam Staley and Christopher Jones take the Appalachian folklore and their history and bring them to life through sounds that are expansive and breathing. GHOSTS invites listeners into an unbelievable experience, spilling forth with intrigue and possibility, from the pre-revolutionary haunting motif of “Cothran” to the family story that serves as the foundation for “Catamount,” as well as myth being married to melody.

GHOSTS was mostly recorded in Raleigh with some field recordings from Graham. The central pillars of the project combine acoustics, lap steel, and textured samples to enrich and create ambiance and emotion.

The production is at the same time intimate and expansive in the spirit of the media genres graduates of the Nick Drake classrooms (Cohen, Marissa Nadler), and even a hint of post-hardcore sounds in Thrice or something like Beloved. Kinsley has taken music grounded in folklore and injected it with the kind of total soul that one would find, as re-payment of sorts, embedded in each artifact they treated with care and respect.

Instead of following the trends, GHOSTS chooses stillness, subtlety, and story. It is an uncommon release that feels both outside of time and also deeply intimate; it is a musical séance that you will continue to feel long after your final listen. If you are a fan of the gothic Americana and folk-noir side of the musical spectrum, GHOSTS is mandatory listening.
