Coming out of West Chester, Pennsylvania’s indie rock scene, Flavor Wave returns with an emotionally rich new single titled “Sad Songs on the Radio.” Produced and engineered by Tyler Ripley, “Sad Songs on the Radio” is a snapshot of love unraveling in public, set against the everyday and vulnerable backdrop of a cold car ride.
Built on lush guitar textures, moody acoustic strumming, and Josh Speaker’s hauntingly smooth vocals, the song excels at utilizing slow-burning emotional tension. Vivid imagery strikes you as individual sounds evoke a flurry of emotions. A conversation going sideways becomes a quiet storm, a passenger door gets slammed, and a single figure walks down the shoulder, while the car stereo conveniently plays sad breakup songs.
The members of Flavor Wave do not just add their parts musically, but embody the emotion of the song. The chorus has a wave of cathartic power that expresses the pain of disconnect, as well as the reluctant sense of freedom that holds. There’s nothing about this song that seems contrived or melodramatic. You’re left with an incredibly real and relatable sadness simmering just under the surface.
"Sad Songs on the Radio" is a bright spot for Flavor Wave a wistful, sonically rich track that captures heartbreak beautifully, as would be in a film. With their second album on the way, this track is a strong showcase of the unique emotions this band can evoke, and it will firmly place them as one of the most promising emotional storytellers in indie rock.
