John Korbel Proves Creative Passion Has No Expiration Date on “Johnny Still Got Game” Album

John Korbel's musical journey is defined by persistence, curiosity, and the freedom to keep creating. On his eleven-track album, “Johnny Still Got Game,” the Orlando-based singer-songwriter brings decades of experience into a collection that balances sophisticated arrangements, playful imagination, and thoughtful storytelling. Rather than treating age or time away from music as limitations, Korbel embraces the possibilities of artistic reinvention, showing that creative ambition can remain alive through every stage of life.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Korbel began playing guitar at twelve and developed his early career within the city's vibrant rock scene. Performing under his birth name, John Knoblauch, he built a regional following with the John Knoblock Band before becoming frontman of Jelly Rolls, an eight-piece group featuring a three-piece horn section. Years of live performances sharpened his musical instincts before he eventually relocated to Florida. After stepping away from music as a full-time pursuit, he returned to recording in 2017, encouraged by the opportunities independent production and digital distribution offered.

That renewed commitment has developed into a distinctive musical catalogue, including “Earthlight,” “Bourbon Street Taps” and “Falling Feels Like Flying.” His sound occupies a space between jazz, sophisticated pop, funk, soul and singer-songwriter traditions. Influences such as Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, Michael Franks and Ben Sidran provide context, but Korbel's identity emerges through his conversational writing, unexpected imagery and interest in musical collaboration.

“Johnny Still Got Game” brings those qualities together through songs inspired by personal experiences, observation and imagination. “Paint a Starry Night” considers romance later in life, using artistic imagery to explore affection, memory and renewal. “Great Flowing River” moves beyond familiar landscape metaphors, reflecting on American history, race and reconciliation. Its emphasis on crossing bridges becomes an invitation to acknowledge difficult histories while considering how people might move forward together.

Elsewhere, “Speed Shop at the Top of the World” embraces surreal humour and adventurous wordplay. Its unconventional imagery reveals a songwriter comfortable allowing an unexpected idea to develop without forcing it into a predictable structure.

The album also reflects a collaborative recording process. Working with longtime producer Mark Falchuk, Korbel recorded vocals, guitar, and mixes at his Orlando home studio, The Alcove, while musicians contributed remotely from different locations.

“Johnny Still Got Game” is ultimately a statement about continuing to participate in life creatively. Korbel offers no formula for staying relevant; instead, he follows curiosity, values collaboration, and keeps writing. His story makes the album's central idea convincing: artistic growth does not have an expiration date.
