Minneapolis-based artist UCHAYE turns emotional upheaval into a story of reinvention on WAR IS OV3R, a five-track debut EP shaped by heartbreak and ambition. Drawing on the force of 1980s rock while speaking to current uncertainty, the Nigerian-Zimbabwean musician builds a narrative about what pain can expose and what a person chooses to become afterward.
Born in Alton, Illinois, and now based in Minneapolis, UCHAYE developed her musical instincts early. Music classes began at age two, followed by violin in her school orchestra at seven. That classical foundation gave her an understanding of discipline and musical structure, but her artistic direction sharpened during the pandemic, when she returned to guitar, recorded at home, and began shaping original songs. Her bedroom studio remains a key part of that process, where a passing thought, conversation, or guitar phrase can become the start of a story.
Years of mentorship with musician and producer Shaun Fleming, known professionally as Diane Coffee, helped UCHAYE refine her songwriting, arranging, and production. Their work prioritizes musicianship and emotional expression, giving her developing rock identity room to feel considered and instinctive. Her influences include David Bowie, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Jett, and Lenny Kravitz.
WAR IS OV3R unfolds like a compact emotional drama. “Denial (Interlude)” opens on the wreckage, setting the atmosphere for “Denial,” where heartbreak curdles into obsession and the refusal to accept an ending blurs memory with fantasy. “Survive” shifts the perspective: heavy guitars and raw feeling accompany the decision to leave a damaging attachment behind. On “Currency,” the protagonist redirects hurt into ambition, chasing wealth and control as substitutes for intimacy. The closing track, “Live Wire,” breaks that cycle open with blues-rock drive and anthemic force, turning survival into confidence and renewed possibility.
The record’s war is personal, not simply romantic. UCHAYE connects the protagonist’s mindset with her own encounters with fear, uncertainty, and self-doubt. Its central idea is not that struggle makes someone invincible, but that freedom begins when inner conflict no longer dictates every move. That distinction gives the EP’s transformation emotional weight without pretending healing is effortless.
With more than 600,000 TikTok followers and performances at Twin Cities landmarks including Paisley Park and First Avenue, UCHAYE is building a platform for this vision. WAR IS OV3R introduces an artist using classic rock vocabulary for a current conversation: how to turn pain into purpose, and how to come alive without remaining at war with yourself.
