SUNTWIST introduces its debut EP, “Matchbox,” as a snapshot of young adulthood, uncertainty, friendship, and belonging. Formed in Phoenix, Arizona, the five-piece transforms the uneasy transition beyond college into five guitar-driven songs that carry warmth, movement, and honesty. The result is an indie rock release that feels nostalgic without becoming trapped in the past.
The story begins in a Phoenix dorm room, where vocalist Logan Mullert and bassist Isaac Morrison first connected before Grant Baker, Braden Kotzin, and Nathan Dilla joined the group. None of the members came from Arizona, yet Phoenix became where separate histories could meet. This displacement gives “Matchbox” an important emotional foundation: home is not simply somewhere you came from, but somewhere you learn to create together.
The EP’s title captures that uncertainty. As college approached its end and members faced the possibility of moving away for jobs, the band compared their situation to matches gradually burning out. It speaks to how friendships can feel vulnerable when circumstances change, while acknowledging that endings can become another chapter.
“Matchbox” moves through that tension with bright guitars, steady rhythms, melodic vocals, and arrangements that balance dreaminess with forward momentum. “Stay High (Chasing Ghosts)” introduces a relaxed, retro-leaning groove questioning the pressure to keep pushing. “Winded in the Moonlight” carries longing into a lively chorus, while “Why Mind It” turns burnout into restless energy. “I Just Wanna Dance” shifts attention toward presence and shared experience, celebrating the decision to enjoy the present.
Closing with “Man I Wanna Be,” the EP becomes more introspective. Shimmering guitars and layered vocals support a song about self-perception and the clarity that can come from seeing yourself through someone else’s eyes. It reinforces SUNTWIST’s central idea: identity is shaped not only by private thoughts, but also by genuine human connection.
Produced by Baker, Mullert, and Kotzin, with Ryan Buckland handling mixing and mastering, the EP was recorded at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences and TrackPharm.
SUNTWIST has developed its identity through Phoenix performances at Crescent Ballroom, Valley Bar, The Rebel Lounge, The Nile, and Last Exit Live. With “Matchbox,” the band turns uncertainty into connection, reminding listeners that growing up does not require having every answer. Sometimes it means staying present, valuing the people beside you, and finding peace within change together.
