Finlay Birch Chronicles Memory and Letting Go on the Album “Weight Will Unwind”

For Scottish songwriter Finlay Birch, Weight Will Unwind is more than a debut album. It is the closing of one personal chapter and the beginning of another. The ten-track record gathers songs written over almost a decade, carrying fragments of different places, different moments, and different versions of the artist himself. From Inverclyde to Brighton and eventually to the Isle of Mull, Birch has carried these stories with him, allowing them to grow naturally before finally bringing them together in a single body of work.

Now based on the Isle of Mull, Birch has found a landscape that mirrors the reflective quality of his songwriting. His music blends indie folk, alternative rock, and understated soft rock influences, but the defining feature of his work is its honesty. The songs are built around everyday emotions, memory, distance, love, uncertainty, and the quiet process of learning how to move forward without forgetting what came before.

The album was recorded over ten days on Mull with producer and longtime friend Dylan Cooper, whose diverse production background includes work with artists such as Charli XCX, Lil Peep, Anne-Marie, and Ashley O. Together, Birch and Cooper moved away from the lo-fi bedroom recordings that marked his earliest independent releases during the COVID period, embracing warmer arrangements and a more collaborative creative process while preserving the intimacy that shaped his musical identity.

The title Weight Will Unwind captures the central idea connecting all ten songs. Birch describes the record as an exploration of carrying emotional burdens for a long time and gradually learning to release them. Some compositions remained with him for nearly ten years before reaching their final form, making the album feel less like a collection of isolated tracks and more like a diary documenting growth, change, and acceptance.

That personal connection extends beyond the music itself. The album artwork, created with artist Calum Hall, is based on a photograph taken by Birch’s father in 2016, showing his mother and childhood dog, Skye, beside the Glengorm Standing Stones on Mull. The image reflects the importance of family, place, and memory, themes that quietly run through the entire project.

Weight Will Unwind introduces Finlay Birch as a distinctive new voice in Scottish songwriting. More importantly, it reveals an artist unafraid to sit with difficult emotions, trusting that reflection, patience, and human connection can transform old burdens into something meaningful and lasting.
