Mahto & The Loose Balloons Capture Raw Appalachian Spirit on the EP “On Air”

In an era dominated by polished studio perfection, Mahto & The Loose Balloons offer something refreshingly human. Their eight-song EP “On Air” captures the fragile electricity of live performance, presenting music in its most honest state. Recorded across three separate radio broadcasts, the project serves as a living document of a band willing to embrace unpredictability in pursuit of authenticity.

The group is led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mahto Addison-Browder, whose creative instincts sit comfortably within the storytelling traditions of Americana and folk. Based in Johnson City, Tennessee, Mahto writes songs that often feel like fragments of everyday life observations drawn from family stories, roadside memories, and moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed. His music reflects the cultural landscape of Appalachia, where history, humor, and hardship frequently coexist.

Supporting him is a tight-knit ensemble of collaborators who give the music its distinctive texture. Will Diebold contributes upright and electric bass, Niko Graham anchors the rhythm on drums, Ella Patrick adds expressive fiddle lines, and Travis F. Welch expands the arrangements with guitar. Together they form a flexible band capable of moving easily between gentle folk storytelling and spirited, roots-driven improvisation.

“On Air” stands apart from typical recordings because of its unusual origin. Instead of entering a studio to construct songs piece by piece, the band performed live radio sessions and preserved those moments exactly as they occurred. The tracks were recorded during appearances on Radio Bristol’s “Appalachian Travels” with host JP Parson, WMMT 88.7 during Tea Wimmer’s fund drive broadcast, and “Appalachian Artist Live” with Kevin Edwards on WEHC and WISE 90.7.

That environment leaves little room for perfectionism. Microphones are placed, the broadcast begins, and the performance unfolds in real time. Mistakes cannot be erased, and second takes rarely exist. Yet that immediacy becomes the EP’s defining strength. Listeners hear the room, the spontaneity, and the subtle tension that accompanies knowing an unknown audience might be listening somewhere beyond the station walls.

Several songs reveal the band’s narrative personality particularly well. “Onions,” perhaps the most playful track in the collection, draws inspiration from real family history, turning personal anecdotes into gentle humor. Meanwhile, “Virginia Side” offers a striking reinterpretation featuring Ella Patrick, also known as Momma Molasses, who joined the performance spontaneously despite not previously knowing the song.

Across all eight recordings, Mahto & The Loose Balloons embrace the idea that music should feel discovered rather than manufactured. “On Air” reflects an artist chasing that feeling, songs drifting across radio frequencies, waiting for someone stuck in traffic or scanning the dial to stumble upon them and stay awhile.
