Hanan Townshend Reflects on Grief, Memory, and Quiet Renewal Through the Piano Piece “What We Lost II”

Award-winning composer and pianist Hanan Townshend has built a career rooted in emotional precision and patient musical storytelling. Based in Austin, Texas, in the United States, Townshend is widely known for his cinematic work, particularly through collaborations with filmmaker Terrence Malick. Yet alongside his film compositions, the musician continues to pursue a deeply personal solo practice, one that explores the quieter territories of human feeling. His piece “What We Lost II” stands as a striking example of that intimate artistic direction.

The track introduces Townshend’s forthcoming piano-led project, What We Lost, a body of work shaped by a single. Townshend approaches it with humility and restraint. “What We Lost II” unfolds slowly, guided by a delicate piano theme that gradually evolves in tone and emotional weight.

This restrained approach reflects the composer’s background. Raised on a remote coastal farm in New Zealand, Townshend grew up surrounded by vast landscapes where silence held its own presence, filled with wind, distance, and the quiet rhythms of nature. That early experience continues to shape his musical philosophy. Rather than rushing toward climactic resolution, he focuses on attentive listening, allowing each sound to exist with intention.

The recording process for the album reinforced that philosophy. Instead of using a polished studio instrument, Townshend chose his child’s upright piano at home. The subtle imperfections of the instrument, uneven tones, soft mechanical noises, and the room's natural resonance created a sonic texture that mirrored the emotional complexity of grief itself.

Nature unexpectedly became part of the composition as well. With single-pane windows beside the piano, outdoor sounds drifted naturally into the recordings: birds, insects, and the quiet movement of the garden outside. Initially perceived as interference, these sounds soon revealed themselves as a meaningful layer within the music. Rather than removing them, Townshend embraced them, even placing microphones outdoors so the surrounding environment could participate in the recording.

This choice transformed “What We Lost II” into something more than a piano composition. The piece becomes a reflection on memory and its unpredictable nature. Just as natural sounds weave gently through the music, memories surface in grief, sometimes clear, sometimes distorted, yet always alive.

Through this thoughtful composition, Hanan Townshend offers listeners an invitation to pause. “What We Lost II” does not attempt to resolve sorrow. Instead, it acknowledges the fragile balance between absence and hope, reminding us that even in moments of loss, traces of life continue to sing quietly in the background.
