Kelsie Kimberlin Honors Ukrainian Courage and Youth Resilience on the Single “Champ”

Kelsie Kimberlin has built her career on purpose as much as performance. Based in Washington, DC, she merges pop songwriting with humanitarian advocacy, using her platform to amplify stories that demand global attention. Her single “Champ” stands as one of her most direct tributes to resilience, dignity, and youth courage during wartime.

Released on the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, “Champ” centers on a real moment involving 16-year-old Ukrainian karate champion Mariia Hnes. After competing in Venice and earning a medal, Mariia refused to stand beside a Russian athlete for a celebratory podium photo. Her father serves in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and her quiet act of protest became a viral symbol of national pride. Kimberlin recognized the gravity of that decision and transformed it into a broader anthem about moral strength.

To bring authenticity to the story, Kimberlin traveled to Kyiv to film the music video with Mariia during ongoing missile and drone attacks. Scenes include the two sheltering in a hallway as explosions echo outside. Rather than dramatizing fear, the video emphasizes mentorship and encouragement. Kimberlin appears as a supportive presence, reinforcing Mariia’s confidence and framing the championship not merely as an athletic victory but as integrity under pressure.

The song also launches a campaign supporting the children of Ukrainian soldiers who participate in sports. Through the Kelsie Kimberlin Foundation, funds raised are directed toward helping these young athletes maintain purpose and opportunity despite instability. Kimberlin has stated that sports provide direction and pride for children whose parents defend their homeland.

Her advocacy extends beyond a single release. Kimberlin has filmed in Bucha and Irpin, documented the war’s impact in the forthcoming documentary The Last Message, and received the United Nations Humanitarian Award as well as the St. George’s Royal Medal of Honor presented by King Charles III for her support of Ukraine.

“Champ” encapsulates Kimberlin’s identity as an artist who refuses neutrality in the face of injustice. The record transforms one teenager’s decision into a universal message: true champions are defined by principle. Through music, film, and philanthropy, Kelsie Kimberlin continues to align artistry with courage, ensuring her voice serves both culture and conscience.
