Some albums shout for attention. Watching The World Go By does the opposite. It listens first. From Novo mesto, Slovenia, veteran guitarist, songwriter, and producer Jernej Zoran delivers an album that feels quietly expansive and an unhurried reflection on time, connection, and the shared emotional language that binds people across borders. Built on ten songs, the album stands as both a personal checkpoint and a global collaboration, shaped by decades of musicianship and a deep respect for music as a human constant.
Born in 1973, Jernej Zoran’s relationship with the guitar began early, guided by his older brother, and was ignited permanently the moment he saw U2: Rattle & Hum in a cinema in 1988. That experience watching sound, image, and emotion converge became formative. Influences like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Queen, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton didn’t just inform his style; they embedded a belief that music can be expansive without being excessive, expressive without losing clarity.
After years in Slovenian bands, Zoran embarked on a solo journey in 2012. Since then, he has released seven albums and two EPs, becoming one of Slovenia’s most prolific and respected blues-rock voices. Often recognized for his expressive Stratocaster work and melodic instincts, Zoran has consistently balanced technical fluency with emotional restraint. His 2021 instrumental release, What Happens If I Press This Button?, expanded his international reach and confirmed his ability to communicate without words.
Watching The World Go By builds on that foundation but widens the lens. Created through remote collaboration, the album brings together musicians from Slovenia, Croatia, the United States, Ukraine, Italy, and South Africa. Guitars were recorded in Zoran’s home country, bass tracked in Croatia, drums laid down in Louisiana, and keyboards shaped largely in Italy, with additional vocal contributions crossing continents. The result is not fragmented; it’s cohesive, unified by tone rather than geography.
The album is a rich collage of rock, blues, and melodic pop sensibilities. Acoustic passages feel intimate and contemplative, while electric moments surge with confidence and warmth. Zoran’s guitar work is central but never domineering, sometimes gentle and reflective, other times bold and expressive, always in service of the song. Each track feels like a window rather than a statement, allowing listeners space to project their own experiences.
The album’s title is telling. Watching The World Go By doesn’t rush to comment or critique. Instead, it observes. There’s a quiet awareness running through the record, an understanding that humanity, peace, and inner awareness aren’t loud ideas, but lived ones. In an era defined by speed and saturation, Zoran chooses patience, nuance, and connection. This album is not just another release in a long discography; it is a reaffirmation of purpose. Jernej Zoran reminds us that music does not need borders, trends, or urgency to matter. Sometimes, it only needs honesty, craft, and the courage to slow down and listen as the world moves past and through us.
