Suris Bring Emotional Art-Rock Brilliance with “Pertinax”: A Powerful, Atmospheric Album from High Wycombe Duo

Some artists make music for you to listen to. Suris make music you can live inside. The High Wycombe duo Lindsey and David Mackie have been quietly creating a sound that feels intimate, cinematic, and deeply human. Their new album, Pertinax, has 13 tracks and offers the clearest glimpse yet into who they are: two lifelong creators who view music not as a job, but as part of their marriage, identity, and survival.

The title, Pertinax, means “to persist, stoically.” If one word captures the Mackies’ journey, it’s persistence. They met as students at the University of East Anglia, crossing paths at a charity gig. Lindsey led a band that mixed elements of Siouxsie and Blondie, while Dave played guitar in a punk group. Their early collaboration was messy, raw, and full of energy. They recorded on four-track cassette machines, bounced tracks endlessly, and produced music that caught the attention of Ensign Records and later Polygram.

Just as opportunities were emerging, life took a turn. Lindsey’s manager passed away, and soon after, she became pregnant. Instead of stepping back, the Mackies did what they always did: they adjusted. They built their studio, raised their family, and kept making music on their own terms. No ego, no gimmicks, just instinct, intuition, and a shared artistic connection.

That spirit shines through Pertinax. Lindsey’s vocals feel lived-in, full of emotion and quiet strength. Dave’s production envelops her like a shadow, featuring textured guitars, warm basslines, and details you notice only on a second or third listen. Influences like Kate Bush, Radiohead, and Fleetwood Mac linger in the background but never overshadow their sound. Suris sound like Suris.

Each track on the album tells its own story. “Mended” reflects on fragility through the Japanese art of Kintsugi. “Now” gently reminds you to stay present. “Eruption” speaks to political disillusionment with sharp honesty. “Whole” tributes women resisting oppression and features the voices of their friends, the “Persisters.” “Huma” uses movement and shifting sections to capture the escape of a mythic bird, complete with a stirring sax solo from Felix Flower.

Even when the music feels smooth, there’s always something emotionally subversive beneath the surface. That’s their gift: they write songs that unfold slowly, like secrets shared in confidence. With Pertinax, Suris reject trends and don’t try to fit a mold. They offer a piece of their world that is layered, vulnerable, atmospheric, and defiantly authentic. This album lingers with you long after the final track fades.
