As many artists do, Energy Whores tell a story of the time. But, instead of just telling it, they dissect the times completely. One of their recent releases, "Electric Friends," is a very explicit statement of a way the NYC duo sees the loneliness of the digital world, which is one of the most ironic but less talked about epidemics of modern life. A slow, burning, heartfelt, and emotionally charged electro parable of sorts is what comes out of this, and it is a work that sounds very close to the listener yet is very disturbing at the same time. At the same time, on the one hand, it is an addictive production and, on the other hand, it is a social truth that is very sharp and direct.
The story of Energy Whores starts in a NYC DIY basement studio where the idea of the band was born. The band is the result of the meeting of the minds of Carrie Schoenfeld, who, apart from being a classically trained pianist, is also an indie filmmakerOff-Broadwayay producer, and an incredibly creative force, and Attilio Valenti, who is a guitarist. Their path of work and the brand that they would become has been very obvious from the very start: they intended to combine the signed off electronic sound with political theatre, and to turn social commentary into a kind of thing that you can have a dance to. The band’s unique blend of EDM, electro, pop, and art experimental rock sound, along with the band’s personality and its anti-mainstream stance, has been praised by CLASH, Fame Magazine, indie radio, and the band has been slowly but steadily becoming a cult in the international underground scene.
“Electric Friends” is a track where the duo departs further than ever before into their own world. This song is a reflection of the artists brought up on the internet but deprived of the real world, a planet in which the created avatars are passing themselves off as the intimacy that never actually existed, and “friendship” is only alive until someone doesn’t turn the light off. It was made in Logic X with many layers of synths, keyboards, and electronic drums. The sound is quite cool, but the whole idea of the song seems to be very distant, and the song is somewhat of a heartbreak, an inducing story that describes what is happening, and it is sad that the story is quite out there.
Schoenfeld's pieces of work are no less sharp than before. “The moment electricity goes off, all those beautifully crafted illusions fall apart, ” is what she is saying, pointing out the vulnerability of the online world. Her words mirror the mental side of the dependence on what is happening online; the emoji heads, glowing lines, and algorithmic lifelines are all terms that unveil how the human longing for connection has been repackaged into a very hollow, performative, and addictive thing without the human need for connection being recognized.
The video for the single takes that to the next level: love and warmth of a person filtered through the cold light of LEDs, closeness to each other being reduced to digital theatre. This is a continuation of their solid art-driven ethos, where the launch of a product always comes with a symbolic narrative and an uncompromising message.
Energy Whores’ records have been a reflection of their characters, fearless and ready to face the uneasy side of life. For instance, their song “Hey Hey Hate” and “Pretty Sparkly Things” do through wonderful noise and chaotic, dance-ready music arrangements, and theatrical lyricism that mocks authoritarianism and consumerism. The record Arsenal of Democracy (vinyl released in October 2025) by the duo promised a very deep dive into avant, electro rebellion, and was the HX forensic analyst they'd mash up their ultra, electro dance styles with synth, pop, experimental art rock, and folk, rooted in lyrical storytelling. Listeners should expect dance, floor darkness, coupled with poetic confrontation and lines that confront the complacent with an element of surprise. At the heart of it all lies Schoenfeld's artistic manifesto: “I don’t write love songs. I write warning signs.” “Electric Friends” is exactly that kind of song, a glowing, hypnotic warning signal for a world that is drowning in fake connections.
