Odelet Paints with Sound on Her Genre-Defying New Album, Raindance

From Detroit and now based in California, Odelet's Raindance is an enthralling introduction to her almost-sentient sonic world. Though the album comprises only four tracks, it is singular and massive, with each song ornate and coalescing surrealist R&B, experimental soul, ambient soundscapes, and dub. The songs stood alone as a collection that is genre-less and yet feels incredibly personal and cohesive.

One of Odelet's brilliant abilities is blending mood with melody. Every layer in Raindance feels deliberate, with spirit-like vocals drifting over moodily rich analog textures and rhythmic hooks. Raindance was mixed by Larry Crane, distinguished engineer and founder of Tape Op Magazine, whose mixture deepens the sonic orientation of Raindance by both warming and clarifying it. The melding of warmth of the retro sounding textures enhances the ethereal-dreaminess of the sound while maintaining an honesty, unique and spirited to Odelet's aesthetic.

In addition to the original album, Raindance is simultaneously released with a full-length companion remixed album, Raindance in Dub. Raindance in Dub offers a remixed version of each track through the contextual prism of classic '70s dub. This extension embodies a smart decision and eloquently emphasizes Odelet's range and respect for music vernaculars.

Raindance is not an album; it is a statement. It solidifies Odelet's identity as an artist who values a vision that is both environmental and emotional and who is willing to step outside of conventional norms. Raindance is music meant for the engaged listener who cares for colour, texture, narrative, and believes in art that is fearlessly original.
