In The Out Cats, Boston-based composer Marc Soucy provides a characteristically colorful, bass-driven soundscape piece that both harks back to and manifests itself at a new point. The Out Cats serves as the fifth piece in Soucy's ANTARTICA: The Live Archives, an experimental, improvisational adventure piece that encapsulates the youthful energy of Soucy's mind with his rock band Antartica. Now, years later, Soucy revisits his style of compositions that take the listener back to the neo roots of his emerging craft.
The Out Cats consists of what was a general carefulness with the colors/layers of sounds combined with a bucket load of instruments, creating spontaneity. Throughout The Out Cats, it is implied that the search for a new moment drives the music: it conjures the era of Soucy’s caretaking initiation of his projects since the 1980s.
The combination of prog-rock, ambient, and sonic interventionism permitted Soucy to illustrate the moods of momentum, immersion, and a feeling of natural flow through the musicians.
With the release of Through The Quadrangle, the final piece of his STIR trilogy nearing fruition, The Out Cats is a reminder of his creative vision. After years of creating for other people, it seems overdue and just right for Marc Soucy to share his original works.
