Leicester's genre-defying trio, 9 O'Clock Nasty are back with Peacekeeper, a new single that captures the rising sting of societal sentience everywhere. Ever the genre resistors, 9 O'Clock Nasty seamlessly combine elements of punk, garage rock, funk, and satirical prose to deliver yet another in-your-face anthem with Peacekeeper, a song that reflects the state of the world. Peacekeeper, the second release from the band's upcoming LP Chaos, builds on the band's legacy for wicked smarts and tireless propulsion.
Peacekeeper is muscular from the first riff in the song, which tastes like Blood on the Dance Floor. After the first few jagged guitar lines from Pete Brock accompanied by Ted Pepper's drive from the Bass, the song finds a blistering tempo and stays there. The pounding drums and frenetic energy translate into a pulsating beat that reflects an uncut garage-punk quality to the music, aggressive infectiousness pushing things along.
The lyrics zero in on themes of division and the ever-present drumbeat of conflict in society today. The lyrics "Breathe in the hate. Choke on it. Break free." probably encapsulate what many people feel is the oppressive stroking of tensions.
9 O’Clock Nasty does not simply make music; they make sonic provocations. Peacekeeper is a bold reminder of punk music’s ability to point to the fractures of society, and inspire resistance, resilience and rebellion. Combining angst and humour in comfortable measure, the group reminds us why they remain one of the UK’s bravest underground bands.
