James Zero's latest single, YOU'RE A GHOST, hits like a sonic time capsule with its roots planted in the early 2000s pop-punk and emo wave. Expect Blink-182-style riffs, the intensity of My Chemical Romance, and the emotional authenticity of Dashboard Confessional, with a modern flair.
YOU'RE A GHOST is a self-produced/ self-performed opus. The layers of drums, bass, guitar, and vocals (with some delicate vocoder touches) are completed by James, except for the lead guitar parts from big emerging talent RJ Pasin, a long-time collaborator.
The song is a bop, but its lyrical themes of love, loss, and memory are deeper than just a high-energy jam. This is the juxtaposition emo-punk is great at achieving and remains timeless.
YOU'RE A GHOST was recorded at The Winter Station Studios and released through Central PA's Anything But Kountry label; at the same time, it was also debuted with a moody and wonderfully shot music video by Watchers.USA, who captured the song's wandering heart in their frames.
Previewing James Zero's next album early2thou, this single gives a flavor of what to expect: loud, raw, and made out of respect for the genre. Probably one of his best yet, I do hope if the rest of the album is like this, this will be something crazy for fans of Emo from the golden years.
