Ari Joshua’s “Blurry Face” Captures Improvisational Magic with Jazz Legends Medeski & Martin

Seattle-based guitarist Ari Joshua delivers an electrifying dose of raw, improvised jazz fusion with “Blurry Face,” a one-take recording featuring two towering figures of the genre: John Medeski and Billy Martin. Tracked live at Applehead Studios and released through Music Factory Records, the piece is a swirling storm of groove, grit, and spontaneous chemistry proving that some of the best moments in music can’t be rehearsed, only captured.

Built on a hypnotic loop from Martin’s Loops from the Underground collection, the track anchors itself in earthy rhythm and unfiltered energy. Medeski's clavinet work punches through the mix with gritty funk, while his organ textures float with psychedelic warmth. Joshua’s guitar tone thick with fuzz yet highly articulate threads the line between reverence and risk, dancing with the rhythm section in a fearless improvisational dialogue.

The beauty of “Blurry Face” lies in its immediacy. It was a first take, hardly any practice, it was arranged on a moments notice. There are a few overdubs, but the kind that where captured the day of the recording a layer of percussion,  some clavinet, but there is no hiding out, it’s just just three seasoned artists chasing a moment in real time. It’s jazz as it was meant to be: alive, imperfect, and full of surprise.
