New York-based composer and pianist Nick Marks is set to release his latest single, "Champs-Élysées," as part of his upcoming EP Cinematic Chromatics Vol. III. The third and final installment in Mark's ambitious trilogy showcases his signature genre-defying style, blending cinematic R&B, lo-fi grooves, and neo-soul in an effortlessly unique way. With an added twist, "Champs-Élysées" features a lush 21-piece string orchestra, further enhancing Marks' distinct vision of merging classical film scoring elements with modern soundscapes.
"Champs-Élysées" was inspired by Mark's time living in Paris as a teenager, a period that left a lasting imprint on his music, particularly through French culture, language, and art. The track, which began in 2021 during a film score project, evolved into a treasure trove of sounds, including improvised jazz horns, synthesizers from Spitfire Audio’s LABS, and pizzicato strings. The result is a piece that straddles the line between cinematic elegance and cutting-edge urban beats, making it suitable for both concert halls and upscale Ibiza lounges.
This sonic adventure connects the various realms in which Marks exists, encompassing jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul, and electronica, while also honoring his classical and film-scoring background.
The song includes high-quality partnerships with guitarist Bob Lanzetti (Snarky Puppy), drummer and beat programmer Doron Lev, and horn players Andrew Gould (Ron Carter Big Band) and Dave Levy (LCD Sound System). Together, they generate a rich, layered ambiance that exudes a sense of both closeness and vastness.
Reflecting on the creation of "Champs-Élysées," Marks states, "This track morphs between my worlds in cinematic jazztronica with R&B and Neo-Soul influences. While it has a futuristic sound, it also honors that soulful, traditional jazz spirit."
As the lead single for Cinematic Chromatics Vol. III, "Champs-Élysées" is a striking example of Marks' ability to fuse diverse genres and transport listeners through music that feels timeless yet modern.
Fans of cinematic, genre-blending compositions should keep a close eye on Marks' upcoming EP, set to further establish his place in the contemporary music landscape.
